In this regard, the European Union Value Added Tax directives provide the tax regime on supply of goods and services. Under these directives certain financial services are provided with an exemption from tax4. Some key exemptions are:

  • granting and negotiation of credit
  • transactions concerning deposits and current accounts payments
  • debt transactions
  • transactions in shares, debentures and other securities, etc

The Canadian GST is a multi-level value-added tax introduced in Canada on January 1, 1991. The tax is charged on the sale of all goods and services, except certain essentials.
